When a project is the wrong shape
A project has a start and an end. A product does not. If your product is your business, it needs people who know it, who are there when something breaks at nine on a Sunday, and who are still there when the roadmap changes in the spring. Hiring that team takes a year. Renting it from an agency gets you strangers.
The retainer is the shape in between: a small team that becomes yours.
How it works with Qlive
Since 2025 we have run the entire engineering behind Qlive, a tutoring platform serving more than twenty countries. Not a ticket queue: a partner in the roadmap. We propose features, push back on others, build, run the system in production, and answer for it. Thousands of classes a week depend on it, and the relationship is part of the product.
That is the model. It is how we prefer to work, and it is why we take on few partners.
What is included
The roadmap, together. A quarterly plan, revisited monthly, owned jointly. We bring what the system needs; you bring what the business needs; the plan is the argument between the two.
Build. New features, improvements, the occasional rethink. Short cycles, working software every week.
Run. Monitoring, incidents, backups, dependencies, security updates. The unglamorous work that keeps a product trustworthy.
Improve. Performance, cost, the rough edges users complain about. A little every month, so nothing becomes a rewrite.
Advice. Which tool, which vendor, whether AI belongs in this feature, how to think about the next hire. Straight, and in writing.
How it is priced
A monthly retainer sized to the roadmap, reviewed each quarter. Scale up before a launch, down in a quiet season. No lock-in: you own the code, the accounts and the data, and you can stop at the end of any month. Being easy to leave is how we keep partners.
Starting
Most retainers begin as a phase: a first version, a modernisation, or a takeover of an existing system. Once we know each other and the product, the retainer is the natural next step. Tell us where you are and we will suggest the shape.
